Dow Chemical Senior Electrical Relay Field Technician in Freeport, Texas
TheDow Chemical Companyhas an exciting opening for aSenior Electrical Relay Field Technician in the Power Distribution Meter and Relay Team at theFreeport, TXlocation. This role is critical for monitoring, protecting, and controlling the Texas Operations Site Electrical Infrastructure for generation, distribution, and transmission of electricity to chemical production plants and third party power customers.
The Power Distribution Meter and Relay Team, within the Energy Systems Business, is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the protective relaying and electrical metering equipment across Texas Operations. The integrity, dependability, and reliability of the electrical protective relaying systems are essential to minimizing damage due to electrical events by selectively isolating only the areas necessary in the fastest time possible.
The successful candidate will be part of the Texas Operations Power Distribution team located in Freeport Plant B.
•Responsible for the protective relaying and electrical metering systems across all Texas Operations sites (i.e. distribution and transmission substations, power plant switch rooms, chemical process plant switch rooms, dedicated fiber optic networking, and SCADA systems).
•Quickly respond to callouts across the site to troubleshoot issues and events that affect the power distribution electrical network.
•Complete the testing requirements of electrical meters and protective relays, both electromechanicals and microprocessors - SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories).
•Support commissioning and start-up activities for new electrical equipment as needed.
•Perform "hands on" wiring and general electrical work behind energized relay panels, including the installation of temporary and permanent relays, metering, etc.
•Review and revise Meter & Relay (M&R) one-lines and issue updates.
•Keep the relay calibration schedule up-to-date (monthly accounting).
•Review and revise Meter & Relay (M&R) one-lines and issue updates.
•Review relaying testing procedures each month.
*Required Qualifications: *
•A minimum of 5 years of prior experience working with relays and relaying schemes in transmission and distribution systems is required.
•Working knowledge of the theories and working practices of a journeyman electrician. Such knowledge is typically attained by completing at least two years of technical training in electrical theories and practices and five to ten years related Electrical Power experience.
•Working knowledge of current transformer (CT) and potential transformer (PT) circuits and basic relaying circuits.
•Working knowledge of high voltage and medium voltage substation configurations (Ring bus, breaker-and-a-half, Main-Tie-Main, etc.)
•Must be comfortable and competent to work with energized metering, control, and protection circuits. This is a routine job requirement and expectation.
•Attention to detail is a daily requirement due to the potential for site level system upsets and lost production.
•Able to read and decipher electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, relay one-lines, 3 lines, and Logic diagrams, as well as perform troubleshooting from these drawings.
•Competent in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) and be able to perform record keeping functions associated with the work.
•Experienced with calibrating electromechanical relays and be able to troubleshoot electromechanical relay actions.
•Must be willing and able to perform frequent bending, reaching, and lifting.
•Must be willing and able to work in tight or closed-in spaces.
•Must be willing and able to climb stairs/ladders and work high off the ground.
•Must be willing and able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
•Must be willing and able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
•A valid U.S. driver license is required.
•A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
•Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code is preferred.
•Experience configuring a laptop to communicate with microprocessor meters, relays, etc., using various manufacturers’ software is also preferred.
•Experience in microprocessor relays (i.e. SEL) is preferred.
•Knowledge and experience with Lockout/Tagout and Electrical Safe Work Permits is preferred.
•A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required.
