Dow Corning, part of the Dow Chemical Group, is the world leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of Silicone Polymers and Silicon Chemicals for extensive end-user applications. Near to Cardiff, our facility in Barry, South Wales is the largest and most technologically advanced Silicone manufacturing facility in Europe.

Electrical Placement Student:

After an initial induction period you will be assigned a Senior Engineer to mentor you during your year with Dow Corning.

You will work as anElectrical and Instrumentation Engineer, responsible for ensuring the correct operation of data acquisition and process control devices essential for the Barry sites chemical production. You will also spend time working with an extensive array of high voltage systems used on the site for power distribution. You will be assigned a Senior Engineer to mentor you during your year with Dow Corning.

Work Elements:

  • Process Instrumentation

o Commissioning, inspecting and understanding pressure, temperature, level and viscosity equipment plus their feedback loops to Dow’s distributed computer system (DCS).

  • Process Control

o Work on actuated control valves in specific chemical processes. Including the design of site emergency shutoff systems and SIL grade high integrity control loops.

  • High Voltage Systems

o Gain practical knowledge of all major HV voltage components at the Barry site from transformers to a larger compressor motor drive. Visit the Barry sites personal power station (CHP).

During your placement you will be assigned specific small projects or tasks to assist Engineers in improving reliability, carrying out maintenance tasks or small improvement projects.

Applicants must have excellent communication and influencing skills and be comfortable taking a hands-on approach in an industrial processing environment.


  • On-route for a 2:2 or above in Electrical Engineering

  • Fluent in English

  • Computer literate

  • Capability of learning through practical work

  • Application of knowledge
