The Dow Chemical Company has an immediate opening for aResearch Scientist (m/f) within Emulsions, Blends, Powders Product Development R&D, Dow Performance Silicones inSeneffe, BE. The Emulsions, Blends, Powders (EBP) Product Development R&D team is focused on developing and delivering innovative, market-drive solutions in close collaboration with Dow’s customers. This role specifically resides within the Seneffe EBP team, reporting to the Seneffe EBP R&D Leader. The candidate will work closely with Dow’s customers on impactful opportunities demanding novel solutions and expertise in the EBP area.
The Emulsion Product Development group utilizes fundamental understanding of interfaces, polymer science and colloids to deliver innovative solutions that meet our customer’s application needs. The candidate should have a strong background in chemistry. Knowledge of dispersions/colloidal science, surfactants, formulation chemistry, and corresponding characterization methods is a plus. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing, formulating, and testing new products. Solid project management, cross-functional team collaboration skills, and previous commercialization experience are desired. The Research Scientist will work closely with the Global EBP group and Product Development team to develop and deliver new products and solutions.
Serve as SME or project leader on large multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input and deliver results aligned with team deliverables for the purpose of creating value for Dow.
Define and conduct research on key EBP project areas using in-depth knowledge and proactive application of scientific principles, theory and experimental design with working knowledge in multiple disciplines.
Consistently apply the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans and problem solving. Formulate hypotheses and develop experimental plans to test hypotheses. Leverage Six Sigma tools and methodology to solve complex problems with projects of regional or global scope.
Build EBP capabilities, push boundaries on process/chemistry approach and develop an understanding of structure property relationships and stability of these materials for the application
Develop stable products for specific customer needs
Perform applications testing to determine efficacy of new products
Scale-up, sample, and commercialize new products by working seamlessly with other groups, business partners, and functions
Keep current with industry and academia by reading the literature, monitoring competition, and attending conferences
Collaborate with customers and business partners to identify and charter new projects
Utilizes in-depth knowledge of business ambitions, goals, and strategies to define project concepts
Communicate and appropriately document work in the form of internal reports/presentations and external publications/presentations (when appropriate).
Draft and submit patent disclosures as appropriate.
Delivers presentations or reports that distill complex ideas into clear results and proposals; communicates appropriately to influence internal and external audiences.
Demonstrate expertise in use of experimental/computational/theoretical methods and data handling.
Develops strategies for using external contact network; demonstrated influence to external organizations that impact and contribute to Dow success.
Maintain safety as a top priority and advocate adherence to safety policies and procedures. Lead team in promotion of best safety practices, habits, and behaviors.
Desired Skills and Experience
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related discipline
Solid understanding of capabilities across disciplines
Strong personal skills including time management, written and oral communication, self-direction and prioritization
Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion. Demonstrates significant involvement in designing studies, carrying out experiments, interpreting data, etc. to meet project milestones.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to delivers presentations that distil complex ideas and proactively communicates results and progress to technical teams, supervision, management, and business leadership.
Ability to successfully partner with team members and stakeholders from multiple backgrounds.
Strong technical network within the organization.
Passionate about chemistry, polymer science, colloidal science, formulation chemistry, and developing new products for Dow’s customers
5 year of experience in chemistry, a solid understanding of structure property relationships, and an understanding of interfacial sciences
Experienced in Dow chemistry and work processes
Previous product development, scale-up and commercialization experience
Experience working in a cross-functional team environment
Six Sigma/Design of Experiments Training
- Doctorate degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering
