Dow Chemical Industrial Coatings Process Development Engineer in Midland, Michigan
The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Process Development Engineer in our Midland, MI. location. The engineer will be responsible for the process development and scale up of new products primarily focused on waterborne polymer dispersions for various industrial coating applications. This will include becoming a liaison between research, the pilot plants, and production plants. A strong understanding of chemical engineering is required. Familiarity with various chemistries (epoxy, polyurethane, polyester, alkyd, and polyolefins), dispersions and/or manufacturing is a plus. The position requires an understanding of analytical methods including polymer characterization techniques (including particle size analysis and rheological tests). The engineer will be Environmental Health & Safety focused, innovative and show growth potential assuming additional responsibilities within the process development group.
Leads introduction of new products from laboratory scale to manufacturing.
Responsible for introduction of new raw materials to manufacturing sites; select most effective raw material supplier and participates in safety reviews.
Interface with Research and Development, Applications, Supply Chain and Manufacturing to successfully transfer new products to plant scale.
Use Six Sigma tools to ensure product consistently meets target specifications at pilot and production scale. Six Sigma Green Belt Project Leader certification is a plus.
Act as a technical resource, providing process and product related technical support to manufacturing sites.
Understand current manufacturing capabilities and modify process as appropriate.
Understand a variety of chemistries (epoxy, polyurethane, polyolefin, polyester and alkyd)/dispersion processing/interfacial science, and apply fundamentals to ensure successful product introduction.
Write detailed product operating procedures and provide operating conditions to manufacturing sites.
Design, perform experiments and analyze data at laboratory scale and pilot scale to assist with new product scale up and to help troubleshoot problems.
Utilize fundamentals of reaction engineering, heat transfer, mixing and mass transfer to solve complex problems. Manage and prioritize several projects at various stages of new product introduction.
Organize data, write technical reports and presentations
Identifies operational and scale-up problems and creatively solves these problems leveraging learnings to other projects and across the organization.
Scope of Responsibilities:
Geographic Scope: Global. Support process development for new and existing products and new product introductions across all regions. Coordinates with commercial, manufacturing, Research & Development, Technical Service & Development, supply chain personnel across all regions. Supports global Dow Coating Materials manufacturing plants and external tollers (as needed)
Responsible for commercialization of new innovation products.
Identifies manufacturing location for new innovation products.
Bachelors degree or higher in a science or engineering related discipline.

2-5 years of experience in related field and/or advanced degree.
Dispersion, polymer synthesis or plant experience is highly desired.
Pilot plant experience is desired.
Plant/manufacturing experience is desired.
Research and Development experience is desired.
Ability to interact with cross functional and cross regional teams.
Six Sigma experience a plus.
Ability to balance multiple competing priorities.
High bias for action.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong technical, organizational, and troubleshooting skills.
