Dow Chemical Reactor Technologist in Midland, Michigan
The Dow Chemical Companyhas an exciting job opportunity as aResearch Reactor Technologistlocated inMidland, Michigan. This role exists to provide reactor support to the Organics, Polymers & Organometallics (OPO) Research & Development (R&D) group within Core R&D. OPO employs a variety of reactors, both for high-throughput research (HTR) and for standard batch operations, to screen and optimize various homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for polymerization performance. This role will primarily support the batch reactor facilities, with additional opportunities in the HTR pressurized parallel reactor (PPR) capabilities as needed. Efficient communication, positive attitude, the ability to work safely with high temperature and pressurized reactors and teamwork are required to maintain the workflow and minimize any bottlenecks. Research reactor operations are conducted in the context of discovery chemical research projects for which the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the problem solving process.
- Set-up, operation, record-keeping, maintenance, and troubleshooting of research reactor systems.
o Coordination of reactor experiments with research project partners.
o Operation and monitoring of the actual experiments.
o Coordination of the produced samples for analytical testing after completion of experiments.
o Cleaning of the reactors after experiments.
o Conduct maintenance of the reactors as required for optimum performance.
Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety in all job responsibilities.
Follow established safety protocols and procedures to ensure safe operation of both batch and HTR PPR reactors.
Maintain thorough records including notebooks and maintenance logs.
Establish working knowledge of software programs used for research reactor operation.
Active involvement in the discussion and planning of new reactor campaigns and projects.
Cross train on other research reactors to assist the capability with operation coverage as needed for projects.
Serve as owner of reactor systems and take responsibility for daily operation and maintenance.

Demonstration of mechanical skills through previous educational and/or job experience
Demonstration of working effectively with project teams to drive projects to successful conclusions.
Technical writing and presentation skills are an expected part of this position.
Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and have the ability to learn new systems quickly.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills are required.
Must have strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills.
Demonstrate leadership skills - inspire others and lead them through influence.
A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
Must be able to willing and able to work in such environments wearing safety equipment, such as respirators, earplugs, goggles, and steel-toed shoes.
Must be able to willing and able to work in such environments with frequent bending, reaching, and lifting.
Must be able to willing and able to work in such environments working in tight or closed-in spaces.
Must be willing and able to climb stairs/ladders and working high off the ground.
Must be willing and able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
Must have a current, valid US driver’s license
A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
- Basic PC computer skills and a working knowledge of Process Computer Control systems (such as Camile TG) are desirable, and will be essential to learn quickly once in the role.
- Associate’s degree in chemistry or an engineering field is required
